A Buttercream Dream

We expanded the kitchen in this 1960s home to add enough storage and for a family of five (six if you include their sweet pup). The new kitchen and dining area are now in one bright, open, airy space in various shades of white.

  • Common for many homes in the 1990s, the old kitchen included a lot of hunter green and maroon wallpaper and cabinets in a mid-toned wood.

Our client stated that their biggest spatial priorities were removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, getting rid of the kitchen bay window, and adding a sliding door unit in the dining area. For the kitchen cabinetry, our client needed much more storage that was laid out in a more convenient fashion.

The proposed design called for the removal of the north kitchen wall. The perimeter cabinetry now wraps around the south and west walls—much of this square footage used to be dedicated to an eat-in kitchen area. The bay window was replaced with a double-hung. We moved the sink in front of the original double-hung window that’s closer to the dining area. This change allows our client to easily see their kids in the pool while washing dishes. From a food preparation standpoint, this sink location is also ideal because it’s much closer to the range, which is centered between both west-facing windows.

A new, large island comfortably seats four and supplementary, shallow pantry cabinets provide substantial storage along the east wall. The top portion of the pantry cabinets are glass so this wall feels less visually heavy and also allows for some display space.

The perimeter cabinetry is white and the island was custom painted in Worldly Gray, a warm gray by Sherwin Williams. All the metals are matte black and the counter stools are in a dark wood. The flooring was replaced throughout the main living area of their home with a white oak engineered hardwood in a dark stain that contrasts all the light finishes.
